Laser Treatments for Your Feline
The Cat Doctor is pleased to offer Laser Therapy for our feline patients. This is short for Low Energy Photon Therapy. Laser light is delivered to areas of inflammation or pain via a small wand held against the skin of the patient. The procedure is painless and quick. This coordinated burst of photon energy decreases production of inflammatory enzymes, increases circulation, and increases the rate of cellular repair.
Laser therapy can be used to decrease both pain and inflammation in many disease states. It can also be used to promote and accelerate wound healing. Diseases that we can use this therapy are: Osteoarthritis,( both acute and chronic), chronic kidney disease, plasma cell stomatitis, wound healing, and acupuncture points.
We have seen excellent results with pain relief for our chronic osteoarthritic cats. Many older felines are able to jump better, use stairs, and become more functional cats again. We often use the laser either post surgically or after a dental procedure to help relieve pain without additional drugs.
Most cats start out with two 15 min sessions for the first two to four weeks. If good results are obtained, then they usually go to a monthly maintenance plan. Most of the cats that we do therapy on actually seem to enjoy it. They seem to learn that the procedure is making them feel better.
The initial decision concerning the use of laser therapy should be discussed between you and one of our Doctors. The actual administration of the therapy will be done by one of our trained technicians. Humans need to wear eye protection during the treatment, as the infrared wavelength can affect retinal cells in our eyes. We usually just cover your cat’s eyes during treatment. The treatment itself is very short, so if required, multiple sites can be treated in one visit. The entire session is usually less than 10 minutes. We usually have our clients pre-pay for the first four visits so the treatment can be quick and easy for both you and your feline.
Please ask any of our staff about Laser therapy for your feline. We believe this could help many cats feel better without the hassle of drugs and their administration.
